Digital Ministry prepares ruling to delay some data law obligations

MOSCOW, Dec 16 (PRIME) -- Russia’s Digital Development Ministry has prepared a draft government ruling to delay the obligation of telecom operators to raise data storage capacities by 15% under the data retention law for a year, as seen by PRIME in the draft ruling published on the government’s website late on Tuesday.

In force from July 1, 2018, the data retention law, also known as Yarovaya law after Deputy Irina Yarovaya, who actively pushed forward the initiative obliging telecom operators and Internet providers to store customer traffic. The government is yet to decide on types and terms of data storage.

“The draft ruling encompasses a 1-year suspension of the obligation of a 15% annual increase of capacity of the technical means of data accumulation that was to be done for five years after introduction of technical means of data accumulation into operation,” the ruling’s explanatory note read.

The ruling was developed under a joint national action plan for recovery of employment, incomes of citizens, and economy that the government approved in September.
